Sign Of A Good Day

If you are in Kansas you know that we have had a few random 50 degree days. It reminded me, along with many other others, of fall. The season of sweater weather, hammock weather, bonfires and pumpkin spice weather. With this day, I went ahead and reminisced on the past fall and summer season. Days of warmth and adventures.

Reminiscing on these days called for thinking about days on the lake, family vacation, and games of cornhole or spikeball. It was filled with wearing shorts and t-shirts, and maybe the occasional Chacos. But you can’t exactly play or run in Chacos very well. What was the solution? Take them off.

Now you can run around free, right? You can feel some freshly cut grass under your feet. Feel the burning hot dock, only to jump into the water. Be able to dive for the ball that bounced away from you during a heated spikeball match.

Now what do you do when the end of the day comes? You’re probably tired. Your body might be sore or just heavy from the busy day. You’re probably ready to take a shower and relax. You grab your shoes and you walk back into the house to look at yourself. You have dirt all over your clothes, maybe a little mud from the sprinkler that was running earlier. Your hair is sticking up in random places. Sweat drops off your face from all the running you did.

You look down at your feet. You’re taken back because of how dirty they look. Dirt, mud, grass… you did a great deal on your feet today.

This is exactly what happened to a close friend of mine many Sundays ago. There were lots of yard games being played, including some very intense spikeball. She came to rest by me after one of her games and sat down in a huff. She was breathing hard, fixing her hair, and laughing when she looked down at her dirty feet. She paused and said, “Now that… is a sign of a good day.” Then, almost immediately, she got right back up to go play another game.

At first I just laughed. Then I stopped to think about what she said. The nice weather brings out the best in people. It brightens up the light that is in everyone. Smiles are brighter, laughs are louder, personalities are bolder, feet are dirtier. Life is not taken for granted. Everyone wants to soak up the sun, compete with friends and enjoy the fresh air. To enjoy every minute with their peers that they can.

Take advantage of those random nice days. Hammock, build a bonfire, play spikeball, get out the pumpkin spice. It’ll be good for the soul.

Stay golden,

M
